Reading/Language Arts – Our Zoophonics reading program, combined with a variety of other reading and writing programs, have provided all of the components necessary for us to begin independent reading. We are enjoying writing daily journal entries. Playing “make it say” games and focusing on correct form in penmanship. We are truly enjoying the independence that reading allows us to have.
Math – We have previously covered the themes of “sorting and classifying,” “patterns and movement,” “matching and counting,” and “the numbers 0-5.” For the rest of this school year, we will focus on the “numbers 6-10,” “geometry and equal parts,” “the numbers 10-30,” “money,” “measurement,” “time,” “exploring addition,” and “exploring subtraction.” We do a variety of hands-on activities to learn about each concept and apply what is learned to our workbook pages.
Science – Our science curriculum covers the topics of health, animal and plant life, water and energy conservation, the Earth’s land, air and water, weather and a special unit on whales. We conclude our whale unit in February/March with a trip to the Pt. Bonita Lighthouse to whale watch.
Social Studies – This is a key component in Kindergarten. We cover a variety of social skills each day. Along with that, we have a social studies curriculum with units titled, “Who am I?” “What is a Family” “How do I get along with others” How do I make friends?” “How do I solve problems with others?” “How can I be a good helper at school?” “What is my neighborhood?” “Where am I in the world?” “How do people live around the world” and “How can I help take care of the World?”
Special Projects – We celebrate a multitude of holidays and special events. In February, we will celebrate both the “half-way through school” day and 100th day of school! We love to celebrate each class member’s birthday by having special snack and we make a birthday book to commemorate their day.
Enrichment Classes – We are fortunate to have specialty teachers to work with the children in the following areas: music, Spanish, art, technology, P.E., and we attend chapel each week to learn about God’s love for us all.
Field Trips – We attend several field trips in Kindergarten. We go to the pumpkin patch and we attend at least three Youth in Arts performances. We also go whale watching, as mentioned above.
Our kindergarten program is a four-hour day. We have two learning centers times in which we work in groups of eight children to one adult. Parent participation is highly encouraged and greatly appreciated. We have both academic time and time to play to explore and apply our social skills with one another. The ratio of children to adults ranges between 8:1 (during learning center times) to 12:1 (during non-structured times).
