Introducing our Interim Pastor, Rev. Marcus Hess

Pastor Marcus is serving as our Intentional Interim Pastor as we transition to calling a new pastor after the long and fruitful ministry of Pastor Paul Gravrock. His ministry is equipping us to discern from God how to build on all the best we are so that we may call the right new leadership for our mission in Christ.

Pastor Marcus has long experience in this specialized ministry, transitioning many congregations in California, Illinois and Indiana. His experience includes long term pastorates in Minnesota, mission appointments in South Africa, and administrative and teaching responsibilities in our church seminaries.

Pastor Marcus is somewhat peculiar in that he often retreats for long periods of time to his wilderness home overlooking the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northeastern Minnesota. There with his old tractor and chain saw he built his hand-scribed log cabin, sauna, does conventional carpentry, cabinetry, stone masonry, blacksmithing, forest management, is an avid wilderness canoe tripper and practitioner of nature patience and play.

He studied at The University of East Anglia in Norwich, England, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, and Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. He graduated from St. Olaf College, Northfield, and Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Pastor Marcus loves us, shepherds us, and his passion is for us to be the best Christ is calling us to be; affirming and proclaiming God’s radical grace for all peoples, and the costly discipleship of following Jesus into new life through his cross.
