Service Learning
Embedded in the Good Shepherd Lutheran School philosophy is the notion that through community service, students discover what matters most to them as individuals. They learn that the well-being of their local community is a shared responsibility which in turn enables them to explore their faith and become active and responsible world citizens. Community service helps students learn to be leaders, to empathize and to apply moral principles to real-life situations.
The tradition of community service at Good Shepherd Lutheran School involves students and faculty every year. Each grade has its own special way of participating in the greater community, from Kindergarteners working together with their fifth grade buddies to make cards and small gifts for the servicemen & women overseas to the whole school ocean immersion projects that promote environmental awareness.
Students take on a substantial holiday responsibility, such as participating in the Christmas Giving Tree program, Samaritan’s Purse, or supporting Gilead House single parent families. In order to reach out to the local community students bring canned and boxed food for the Marin Community Food Bank. The focus of the chapel offering each week is global as students give to the Heifer Project, and various schools and orphanages around the world. Students also support national relief efforts, such as collecting toiletries, socks and other necessary items for the victims of hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.
