Kim Scheidt
Fifth Grade Teacher
This is Kim’s 12th year teaching at GSLS. Nine of those years have been in 5th grade, with a 3 year venture to first grade, from 2007 - 2010. She’s again traded printing for cursive, and is back in fifth grade this year. She is often asked which she prefers, and replies that she loves both for very different reasons! Her teaching philosophy is that all children learn differently, and all learning styles need to be addressed in our classrooms through diverse and stimulating lessons. Her goal is to build a community of learners by having high expectations for each student's success, and to teach children to become lifelong learners by engaging them in the learning process by offering choices, and high-interest lessons.
She is a lifelong learner, and received her teaching credential and Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Dominican University. She continues to take classes that help her to best meet the needs of her students. Kim is very interested in how children learn, and has taken and continues to take classes about this subject. She is especially interested in how learning differences and difficulties affect learning, because she wants to help every child in her care to become an independent learner who is confident in their abilities. Her experiences teaching and the classes she has taken have helped her address and teach to the vast variety of learning styles teachers encounter in their classrooms.
She has been married for 29 years, and has twin daughters who are 22. In her spare time she enjoys appreciating nature, especially hiking and spending time at the beach. She and her husband have recently completed training to become Rocky Seashore Naturalists through the California Academy of Sciences. They will be volunteering at the interpretive center at the Academy, but will spend most of their volunteer time talking to visitors at Duxbury Reef in Bolinas, one of her favorite places to be!
